To Dye Furs

Ingredients

• one-half gallon of lye
• one quart of soft water
• one-half ounce of acetate of lead
• one-half ounce of sulphate of iron
• three ounces of litharge

Method

   Heat the lye in an iron kettle.

   Powder the ingredients and dissolve one at a time in the lye.

3. 3

   When the liquid is of blood heat, put the furs in for a few moments.

4. 4

   Air them and dip in strong vinegar, then smooth and hang up to dry.

5. 5

   You can make the dye stronger if the color does not take well.
