To Color Cotton a Good Black

Ingredients

• twenty pounds goods
• five pounds sumac
• a few pails of lime-water
• two pounds of dissolved copperas
• a pailful of old sumac liquor
• six pounds of logwood
• one pound of fustic

Method

1. 1

   To a tub of cold water add for twenty pounds goods, five pounds sumac, wring and shake out goods and return to liquid a few times, let stand all night in sumac, then to another tub of water add a few pails of lime-water, put in goods, wring out, and put into another tub of cold water in which is two pounds of dissolved copperas and a pailful of old sumac liquor, wring out six times; wring out and put into the lime-tub again, adding two more pails of lime-water.

   Prepare another tub of water, and adding to it six pounds of logwood and one pound of fustic previously scalded, put in the cotton, and wring out and return ten times; lift out, darken liquid with a little copperas, and return the goods.

   The omission of the sumac gives a purplish black, while the recipe as above gives a jet black.
