Spice Cake

Ingredients

• 1 cup butter
• 2 cups flour
• 2 cups brown sugar
• 1 cup buttermilk or sour milk
• Do eggs
• 1 very scant teaspoon soda
• 2 teaspoons baking powder
• 2 tablespoons cinnamon
• 2 teaspoons cloves
• 2 teaspoons nutmeg

Method

   Cream butter and sugar well, add eggs one at a time, beating after each addition.

   Add flour sifted with baking powder and spices, and milk to which soda has been added, alternately to the creamed mixture.

   Bake in a moderate oven.

   Frost with a mixture of sugar, Karo syrup, and water cooked until it spins a thread, then pour over beaten egg whites and add marshmallow whip.
