Plain Madeira Cake

Ingredients

• Half a pound of Flour
• Quarter of a pound of Butter
• Quarter of a pound of Castor Sugar
• Two Eggs
• Candied Peel
• One teaspoonful of Baking Powder

Method

   Beat the butter and sugar to a cream.

   Separate the whites and yolks of the eggs and beat separately.

3. 3

   Add the yolks of the eggs and sifted flour alternately.

   Beat well.

   Stir in the baking powder, and the whites of the eggs lightly.

   Pour the mixture into a cake tin lined with greased paper and place a piece of candied peel on the top.

   Bake in a moderate oven for one and a quarter hours.
