Green Tomato Pickle. — Slice together a peck of green tomatoes and a quart of onions, and sprinkle the mix- ture with half a cup of salt. Let stand six or eight hours, drain off the water, put the prepared tomatoes into a preserving kettle, add six quarts of vinegar, three Cannings Preserving, and Pickling 177 sweet peppers chopped fine, a quarter of a pound of white mustard seed, and an ounce of whole cloves. Boil slowly three or four hours, stirring frequently, and half an hour before removing from the fire add a pound of sugar
