CHOCOLATE SOUR-MILK CAKE Y2 cup butter or shortening 2 cups flour I cup sugar Y^ teaspoon soda 3 eggs Y^ cup hot water Y2 cup sour milk i square chocolate NEW DELINEATOR RECIPES 139 Cream butter or shortening and sugar; add eggs well beaten, and the milk. Add sifted flour. Dissolve the soda in the hot water and add grated chocolate to this mixture. Beat the mixture smooth and put in a \vell-greased loaf pan. Bake in a moderate oven (380° F.) for forty-five minutes. FUDGE CAKE Ys cup butter or shortening ^ teaspoon salt i^ cups sugar 3^ cup cocoa 3 eggs I cup milk 2^ cups flour i^ cups chopped walnut-meats 2 teaspoons baking-powder i>^ teaspoons vanilla Cream the butter or shortening and sugar; add the well-beaten egg-yolks. Mix and sift the dry ingredients and add alternately with the milk. Stir in the chopped nut-meats, well floured, and add the flavoring. Fold in the stiffly beaten egg-whites. Bake in layer-cake tins in a moderate oven (380° F.) for forty-five minutes. When cold, spread chocolate frosting between layers and on top.
