To Dye Wool Red

Ingredients

• two pounds and a quarter of cream of tartar
• two pounds of alum
• six pounds of madder
• one ounce of aluminous mordant

Method

   Boil the wool in cream of tartar and alum for two hours.

   Hang to drip dry, then rinse in clear water.

   Infuse madder with chloride of tin in warm water, filter, and heat to 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

   Add the wool and raise to boiling heat.

   Remove, rinse, and soak in curd soap solution for fifteen minutes.
