Strawberry Shortcake. One large tablespoon butter, two of loaf sugar, one well-beaten egg, two even teaspoons cream of tartar, three cups flour, one small teaspoon soda, one, cup milk, and strawberries and sugar. Beat the' butter with sugar to a cream, add the beaten egg, rub the tartar in the flour, dissolve the soda in the milk, add it last; bake in a flat pan in a quick oven; when done let it get cold, cut it in half, cover one layer with strawberries and sugar, lay on the top layer, and dust sugar over it.
