Last of all add 1 cup boiling water. When properly made this cake is as light as a feather. — [I. A. S., Me. Dark Cake (No eggs) Cream ^/^ cup butter and lard mixed, with 1 cup brown sugar, add 1 cup sour milk, in which dissolve 1 teasp soda, and 2 cups flour sifted with 1 teasp cinnamon and ^^ teasp each cloves and nutmeg.
