century, when Pierre Laudais, a, tailor of Vitr^, rose to become
Duke, Francis the Second's favourite, and practically governed
the country to his own advantage. His hand was always against
the old nobility, and hence many stirring conflicts. There is
a charming love story running through this story, in which the
heroine, betrothed to a young noble, loses her heart to a hand-
some gypsy, who performs many deeds of heroism. After many
thrilling adventures, he- is proved to be the son and heir of one
of the nobles, and was supposed to have been murdered with his
mother twenty-five years previously.
